ATFI RESPONSE TO HNTB AMERICA THINKS 2014 TOLLING POLL

It is not surprising that the results of a poll commissioned by a road building outfit that bills itself as a top “consultant to toll authorities” would produce pro-tolling results. Interestingly, another recent Rasmussen Reports poll contradicts those findings. That survey concluded two-thirds of Americans oppose a White House plan to toll existing interstates. Serious discussions about the complex and technical issues involved with transportation funding are more helpful in honestly informing Americans than simple polls.

It’s not surprising that a significant share of 1,000 random Americans say they oppose a tax increase – of any kind. That same poll showed three-fourths of respondents oppose a per-mile fee system to pay for roads. A recent Rasmussen Reports poll found two-thirds of Americans oppose a White House plan to toll existing interstates. Transportation funding is a complex issue and simple poll questions do little to advance the discussion on how to raise new road revenue.
