It’s not surprising that a significant share of 1,000 random Americans say they oppose a tax increase – of any kind. That same poll showed three-fourths of respondents oppose a per-mile fee system to pay for roads. A recent Rasmussen Reports poll found two-thirds of Americans oppose a White House plan to toll existing interstates. Transportation funding is a complex issue and simple poll questions do little to advance the discussion on how to raise new road revenue. Recent policy debates in Virginia and North Carolina show that when lawmakers and the public become educated about tolling existing interstates they reject the idea because it is economically harmful. Tolls hurt family budgets, stifle businesses, and jeopardize public safety by diverting heavy traffic from interstates to local roads.
