Tolls Not the Answer, Says ATFI

RICHMOND, Va. -- Crumbling roads are top of mind for policymakers, who are at the same time considering how to prevent the Highway Trust Fund, which supports infrastructure maintenance and repair, from going broke. As the government considers different options--raising the federal fuel excise tax, imposing user fees--a new business coalition is arguing that it should outright reject one potential source of funding: expanding tolling on existing interstate lanes.

Like potholes in the spring, the perennial proposal to raise revenue for state road construction by putting tollbooths on Wisconsin’s Interstate has again resurfaced.

Last week, the toll road arguments got an unlikely bipartisan push from state Assembly Minority Leader Peter Barca,

D-Kenosha, and Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, R-Rochester.

Anti-tolls group formed by trucking companies, truck stops, other sectors

Several trucking companies and trucking trade groups have joined a band of other business and consumer organizations to form an anti-tolling group who says its mission is to keep existing interstates toll-free.

The Alliance for Toll-Free Interstates includes trucking industry members FedEx, UPS, Old Dominion, the American Trucking Associations, all 50 state trucking associations, the Truckload Carriers Association, Quality Transport, H&J Trucking, NATSO and others.
